CREATIVE TOOLS FOR THE FORMATION OF PUBLIC SIGNS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT OF THE BALTIC STATES

2014

<p>In public space there is the information, that is always designed with a specific purpose. For example, signposts are placed to provide direction guidance and to highlight some of the most important objects. Public signs function as the visiting cards of some institution or enterprise, creating indirectly a definite image of these institutions or some ethnic or social groups, while graffiti is written to create and maintain a public image and to express emotions or attitudes towards some person, a group of people, events or processes. To achieve the expected objective the authors of signs often use the eye-catching texts that differ from linguistic and para-linguistic means, such a…

THE USE AND THE SHIFT OF METAPHORS IN ADR

2014

This study on the use and shift of metaphors in alternative dispute resolutions aims to consider the clever use of conceptual metaphors among the linguistic competences that are desirable for mediators working in Europe under the provisions of the Directive 2008/52. The interest in developing the role of metaphors in influencing the resolution of disputes has called for a multidisciplinary approach that will focus on the studies carried out by experts in Cognitive Linguistics, Legal Pragmatics, Law and Mediation matters. Part I presents the claims made by Cognitive Linguistics on what a conceptual metaphor is and how it works in both every day and specialized language; Part II deals with th…

William Penn, solicitor of the Quakers, and the interplay between legal and religious language

2008

English law is repeatedly referred to in the works of the Quaker leader William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania and a great advocate of religious tolerance. A literary and linguistic analysis of the works of William Penn, therefore, can give a vivid, interesting picture of the religious debate which characterized the political arena in 17th and 18th century England, especially as far as legal, political and religious discourse and terminology are concerned. The first part of my paper deals with the importance of law for William Penn and among Friends, underlining how such relevance was given expression in 17th century Quaker literature. Secondly, it concentrates on the interplay between l…

MODELLI, TESTI, PROCESSI: UNO STUDIO COGNITIVO DELLE METAFORE DELESSICALIZZATE E D’INVENZIONE

2014

Metaphors in dialogue: feminist literary critics, translators and writers

2011

This article seeks to investigate the changing perception of the term “translation” in feminist TS thanks to a continuous dialogue with other fields such as, feminist literary criticism, post-structuralism, postcolonial studies and cultural studies that have borrowed and utilised the notion of translation. “Translation” has become a “travelling concept” for feminist scholars who have utilized it in a metaphorical way for a feminist critique of language and ideology. The essay proposes a new approach to feminist translation studies from an interdisciplinary perspective that takes into account key-concepts and figurative language in different feminisms in dialogue. Metaphors of translation an…

Medical Metaphors in Economics News Articles in English and Italian

2017

As Lakoff and Johnson (1980: 3) state in Metaphors We Live by, “our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature.” From a linguistic point of view, metaphors not only exist in everyday language but in specialized discourse too, where they are frequently the result of interdisciplinary borrowings. The language of economics, replete with medical metaphors, is one of the most representative examples of this phenomenon. This paper offers a quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical metaphors in English and Italian economics news discourse, as no research seems to have been conducted so far on the topic from a cross-linguistic…

Imbalance of Power: Social Service Entrepreneurss Experiences of Entrepreneur-Municipality Relationship

2014

We investigate the complex dynamics between social service entrepreneurs and social sector managers through the lens of network metaphor, utilizing our data on social service entrepreneurs’ experiences of cooperation with municipalities. We examine what kinds of dependencies exist in the entrepreneur–municipality relationships and what kind of consequences these dependencies have on social service businesses run by entrepreneurs. Basing on the social service entrepreneurs experience, our findings suggest that while the cooperation with the municipality represents a prerequisite for success, their business represent only one alternative for the renewal of social service structures from the p…

Images of the health emergency in contemporary poetry

2021

Pictures portraying the health emergency around the world, such as those of the potter’s field in Hart Island, of the field hospitals in New York or of the column of military trucks transporting the coffins of COVID-19 victims in Bergamo, had worldwide resonance. This research investigates their metaphorical value in two recent poems: Plaguey Hill by Paul Muldoon and Requiem per una casa di riposo lombarda (Requiem for a Lombard Rest Home) by Fabio Pusterla. The preliminary aim is a complete analysis of the two poems. Thereafter, I will focus on the metaphorical function of the aforementioned pictures. In Muldoon, they convey a new sense of community, and also work on a meta literary level,…

Analysis of research ideas: combining metaphors for research

2009

This paper presents a framework – idea puzzle – for scientific analysis of research ideas. Analysis of research ideas is included in research planning ahead of research implementation and reporting. Research planning is traditionally based on the project metaphor for research which specifies linear tasks, deliverables and deadlines. Such a metaphor does not make explicit, however, decisions which are implicit in research tasks. This gap is fulfilled by the jigsaw puzzle metaphor which specifies interdependent and iterative decisions instead. Idea puzzle framework illustrates the jigsaw puzzle metaphor since it is a synthesis of scientific method in twenty one decisions. Such decisions speci…
